Tax credit available for volunteer firefighters
March 31, 2011
After years of lobbying from the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, Ottawa has now approved a tax credit for firefighters.

Volunteer firefighters who serve more than 200 hours per year will be eligible for the new $3,000 tax credit (which amounts to a savings of somewhere between $450 and $750 for the average firefighter).

According to the CAFC, volunteer firefighters in Canada give their communities an average of 443 hours of service (equal to 60 work days) per year.
